The fishing

What You Catch in Cabo San Lucas

Cabo sits where the Pacific meets the Sea of Cortez, and the drop off is close enough that you can raise a marlin twenty minutes after leaving the dock. That is why it is called the marlin capital of the world.

  • Striped marlin all year, best November to June
  • Blue and black marlin June to November
  • Dorado, mahi mahi May to November
  • Yellowfin tuna July to December
  • Wahoo June to December
  • Roosterfish inshore, April to October

Short trips fish the local grounds just outside the marina. Six and eight hour charters run out to the Golden Gate and the Gordo Banks, which is where the bigger fish hold. Billfish are released as standard practice, and the crew fillets and freezes everything you keep.

Cabo Luxury Yacht Charter FAQ

How much is a Cabo fishing charter?

The 60 ft Sea Ray starts at $1,500 for 2.5 hours and runs to $3,500 for a full 8 hour day, for up to 8 anglers. The 85 ft Sportfisher starts at $2,700 for 2 hours and reaches $5,000 for 6 or 7 hours, for up to 10 anglers with room for 8 more. Every rate is for the whole boat. Mexican sales tax is added on top and fishing licenses are arranged separately.

What is included in a Cabo sport fishing charter?

Tackle, sweet rolls and coffee on departure, meals on board, unlimited beverages, live bait subject to availability, and filleting and freezing your catch at the end. The captain and crew, fuel and the boat itself are all in the price. Fishing licenses are provided by our team at an additional cost, and Mexican sales tax is not included in the package rate.

What fish can you catch in Cabo San Lucas?

Striped marlin runs all year and peaks between November and June. Blue and black marlin show from June through November. Dorado, also called mahi mahi, is strongest from May to November. Yellowfin tuna peaks July through December, wahoo from June to December, and roosterfish along the beaches from April to October. Cabo is one of the few places on earth where you can raise a marlin within twenty minutes of leaving the dock.

How long should a Cabo fishing charter be?

Two and a half hours is enough to fish the local grounds just outside the marina and get a feel for it. Four to six hours is the standard trip and the one most anglers book. Eight hours lets you run further offshore to the Golden Gate or the Gordo Banks, which is where the bigger fish are.

Do we need a Mexican fishing license?

Yes, every person on board who fishes needs one, and it is a legal requirement in Mexican waters. Our team arranges them for you at an additional cost. Tell us how many anglers are in the group when you book and it is handled before you arrive.

Can we keep the fish we catch?

Yes. The crew fillets and freezes your catch at the end of the charter so you can take it away, and plenty of restaurants along the Cabo San Lucas marina will cook it for you that evening. Billfish are released as a rule, which is standard practice in Cabo and what keeps the fishery healthy.

Can we do a cruise instead of fishing on the same boat?

Yes, and both boats are set up for it. On a cruise charter you get appetizers, beverages and a custom meal selection instead of the tackle and bait, and the route runs to El Arco and Lover’s Beach rather than offshore. Same boat, same crew, different day.

Can non anglers come along?

Absolutely, and they often do. The 85 ft Sportfisher takes 10 guests with room for 8 more, and the 60 ft takes 8. There is shade, a salon, a bathroom and somewhere comfortable to sit for anybody who would rather watch than fish.
